I am in the market for Widows 7 Home premium. I was two days too late to pick up the update version for £56. If anyone finds an outlet that is selling it for this sort of price I would be grateful if they let me know. Cheers

Tesco Direct and Amazon both at £63. Not seen it any cheaper of late. Unless of course you know a student, in which case its £30.

I would always recommend buying the retail for the extra £25-£30. If it stays at that price.

If something goes wrong with the install , ( virus , corrupt , HD failure ) then its a gamble if the upgrade will install and active again.
Retail version and you get as many as you want.

It can.
But only allows for for something like 3 h/w changes/upgrades.
But this doesn't mean you lose out with oem.
Just means you call MS UK.
This should be a toll free number.
Even with retail you can end having to call MS.
I would go for either oem/retail.
I think McT got slightly of course referring to oem & retail (difference in price around £30).
Whereas an upgrade when compared to full retail would usually be a lot more.

As for the thanks button.
It only works for one post per thread.
It is not currently available my end.
Even though enabled.
I probably overloaded the settings with all my piccies...

Oem can be , from my experiences. I have used OEM for XP and Vista and reinstalled them a number of times with good effect. As win7 is still so new the OEM offerings are the same price as the Retial (home prem version) if they were cheaper then id say go with the OEM no problem.

Its the upgrade versions that concern me. Due to the possible inability to reinstall should the worst happen. Though i could be wrong , Microsoft claim it will only install when another OS is detected. ?

Due to the minimal cost difference at current between the two , the retail version eliminates these problems for an extra £10-£20 on most sites.

OEM is fine Zeb , Upgrade i have worries about personally. The home prem versions of win7 are under £80 for the retail. Worth the extra i think.

I failed to add that I only ever look at the Ultimate editions of Vista/7.
If you look now there are "new" editions that are listed as "full".
But must have additional packages.
As they "guarantee" you can "upgrade" from XP/Vista etc.
Also I did note that currently most dealer prices for Win 7 are relatively small.
With Vista, MS did in effect produce one disc.
Depending on the "key".
It would denote not only whether an upgrade or full install.
But version too.
So if/when you decided to upgrade.
You paid MS & just got a different serial.
I believe Win 7 is similar.
You still can't swop between 32/64 bit.
That is the main difference for me.
Retail gives you 2 discs.
One 32 bit, the other 64 bit.
Oem is only one or the other.
Not both.

Retail:
Win 7

oem:
Win 7

The difference in price is.... £34.01.

I agree with McstylisT... I've always went with the retail release for the freedom to install on whatever hardware. I usually donate my old rigs with either Linux installed or I pick-up an OEM Windows disc for dirt cheap.

Well guys I ended up bidding for and winning on Ebay, Windows 7 Home premium full version with both 32 and 64 bit discs. I got them for £79 total. I now have to make a final decision on whether I keep the OS for myself or give it to my son for Xmas as I know that he would love the 64 bit version.

I thought that this article may be of interest to you. There is one thing that you must say and that is that Microsoft never let the grass grow under their feet.

With Windows 7 only just released and Office 2010 due for release sometime next year, Microsoft have already begun working on their next major project, Windows 8. While Microsoft haven’t made a formal announcement on the next Windows version, a recent posting on Microsoft’s jobs website looking for a developer to work on Windows 8 has given some tantalizing clues as to what can be expected. The advert was looking for someone to work on the Windows Update interface which allows Windows to download and install the latest bug fixes from Microsoft, with Windows 8 likely to include the ability to update virtual PCs even while they are switched off.

A blog post from a current Windows developer has also given some indication of what to expect. Apparently Microsoft are working on a Windows 8 version that will run on 128-bit processors – current CPUs are usually either 32 or 64-bit, with Windows 7 compatible with both of these types of processor. Currently 128-bit processors are usually only used in graphics chips, and are increasingly being used in parallel processors to execute many calculations simultaneously. This could mean that Windows 8 will sport a high-performance 3D graphics interface, or some other kind of novel interface that represents a radical departure from the current Windows desktop.

However, if you are thinking of passing over Windows 7 in favour of Windows 8, you may have a long wait. The next Windows release probably won’t be with us for a few years yet.
