What Motherboard for the i7 965 Extreme?
I already have the chipset. But thats all, I dont have a mobo or RAM or Video Card or case for that matter, I want a smaller case for this build, no more 10 Opticals, 2 or 4 will be plenty, but I want the case to be sturdy and have loads of USB ports. I would like a mobo that supports USB 3.0 also, any ideas?

Hello
I think you mean I have the CPU, which mobo chipset is best.
I like this one
http://www.gigabyte.eu/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=3251
Though the 55 chipset is cheaper & performance is almost identical.
Most of the latest ranges of mobo's support USB 3.
Though I'd try to go down the eSATA route myself.

Thanks, you are correct, I have the CPU but thats all. That gigabyte looks awesome, and with USB3 I think it might be futureproof for at least a little while.
Now for the case and the RAM. This one will be a real buttkicker.

Yeah , the UD7 gets my vote and its the mobo i am going to looking at next year to replace this matx i currently have.
Any reason you went 965 Alan. ?? Unless you will be overclocking over 4.5ghz there is NO difference in performance from a overclocked i7 920.
Next year the I7 930 will be tarnished with a few other 1366 quads in the pipeline.
I will only be upgrading to gulftown from this personally. Though expensive its not going to be challenged for a while.

Re: What Motherboard for the i7 965 Extreme?
The only reason I got the i7 965 was because I got it for free. We got a big contact at work to support 50 IBM Blade Servers and I was the guy who closed the deal so my boss told me to choose a gift plus my commission. The other guy who helped on the contract got a freakin watch, so I made out good ( I think).

The really funny part was that when I asked for it, I didn't think he would go for it, but he did, ( maybe he didn't order it himself and hasn't seen the price yet?

alan, have a look at the board in my signature it has full USB 3.0 support and SATA 6 GB's.alan1476 wrote:I already have the chipset. If you want a case that is a mid tower but has tons of room and absolutely fantstic airflow look at the case listed in my signature. This must be one of the largest mid tower cases built and the quality is just fantastic.
Good luck in your decisions.
Oh by the way the motherboard is also 32nm ready for the new 6 core beasts that will be released soon...
