Microsoft securuty essentials

Well I have gone and done it.
I am trying out Microsoft security essentials, and have kissed goodbye to Avast.
So far as good, not so invasive, and I'm pretty sure web pages load faster. Try it here

So I am relying on Microsoft for everything in the security department.

It's not bad, but I am not so sure about their firewall... I got my kid an Asus Netbook for xmas and installed MSE, but I think I need a firewall... Comodo is too resource intense I think for a Netbook (Atom CPU). Thinking about just putting Kaspersky Internet Security on it as well. The little rig has Window 7 starter which is not bad for a netbook... will probably have to pick up a 2GB DIMM.

You trusting the MS built in firewall or are you using something else?

Trusting the built in one, along with whatever is also in my Netgear modem router.

I hope it works out for you. While I like Windows 7, I'm not in a place to trust it's firewall to protect me. Microsoft is a software company, not a security company (though I hope the realize more they need to be both). The SPI in a router and the MS Firewall are not a good mix for security... you might want to consider looking into Comodo again (though I had issues with Defense+ and am pretty happy with KIS overall right now though it has some issues of its own). Perhaps with the right mix of Malware prevention/protection and self discipline (along with using Firefox with Adblock Plus and NoScript!!!) you'll be fine. Got my fingers crossed for you Hugo!

Hi

One thing I noticed just recently was that MS Security Essentials hasn't updated as soon as it should.
I have now taken to doing a manual update at least once a day.
Time to go back to KIS, methinks.

Hey Zebs... I am in the market for another 3-pack of licenses (Netbooks) and right now I don't know if I want to give Kaspersky anymore money. Thunderbird 3 issue, Windows Experience Index issues and the half-@$$ed work around... what did you think of Avira or did you pull the plug on it for some reason you might want to share? I'd use MSE, but I don't trust the MS firewall and Comodo is too resource intense for a Netbook... Kaspersky would be ideal, but they must be taking time away from their issues for the Holiday's. In my opinion giving me time to research other options and seek feedback... Looking at BitDefender too, but I don't know anyone that uses it.

I went with KIS as it was a program I felt more comfortable with.
Despite problems of late.
Also cost I got 3 license full retail KIS + 3 license lifetime updates with Tuneup Utilities 2010.
For £23.99 (Thought I'd try the TU 2010 as a replacement for ASC3 ).

Avira was very impressive & possibly better, but this is marginal.
Hands on & support is currently much better.
At least in appearance.
But no additional freebie.
Volume discounting was a little disappointing with the suite too.
£32.75 for single license 1 year. £56.17 for 3 licenses.

My Netbook arrived today, removed McAfee and installed MSE for now. Still undecided if I will give Kaspersky my money for another 3 pack... If they had the 50% of in the states, perhaps. I'll hold out a little while longer and decide. May go cheap and try Comodo again.

Seems a bit strange to me.
Having an excellent automatic updates set up for everything else.
Yet Security Essentials, not seen as essential.
This is a major downside to me.

Well Gents, Comodo was a no-go for the tiny Netbook (Intel Atom 280)... brought the poor thing to it's knees and prevented me from installing my printer drivers.

As far as MSE, It looks like MS provides updates once a day anyway... I always manually update KIS (and before that Eset NOD32) so that is not a huge deal... I can probably write an AutoIt script to update it if needed. Still MS updated Defender, it should update MSE.

Probably going to go ahead and throw KIS on the little netbook and see how it performs.

I'm a bit fed up with MS security essentials as it takes days to update itself, I do forget to manually do it (an age thing)

So I've gone back to avast anti virus.

I have gone back to Kaspersky Internet Suite 2010.
The "FreeTuneUp Utility is a bit of a con.
The version is not compatable with Windows 7.
So if you want the program you end up splashing even more cash.
£17.99 in fact............................

I use the Microsoft Firewall also. I use this setup on 5 systems and have not had an issue with any of them. Knock on wood...

Joel, I have now changed again to MS Security essentials and do a manual update as soon as I log on.
