openSUSE is free, though you can pay.
This is mainly for support, of which there seems quite a bit about anyway.
You can get it delivered in a shiny box..

Downloads offer 4 choices.
1: 4.7GB DVD
Contains a large collection of software for desktop or server use. Suitable for installation or upgrade.
2: Live GNOME
A GNOME desktop you can run from CD or from USB stick. Can be installed as is (no upgrade).
3: Live KDE
A KDE desktop you can run from CD or from USB stick. Can be installed as is (no upgrade).
4: Network
Downloads the installation system and all packages from online repositories. Suitable for installation or upgrade.

Here my advice is.
Download both the Live CD's (unless you already know which variant you prefer).
Make use of trialling them.
Once happy to move on.
Either:
Install from the relevant Live CD.
or
Download & install from the DVD.
The DVD although larger doesn't contain an astronomical amount more.
As it covers the various versions.
Which you select during the install process.
