Wi-Fi & Linux
Well here goes......1st technical question on Linux
All the computers in the house are running Wi-Fi so if I do a full install of Linux (openSuSE but sure this will apply to all flavours) will it work ok or do you think I will need to have it connected via ethernet to install and get the wi-fi part working?

Have similar devices for the BT Vision box so if I need to have a wired connection for install I can use those to get it working or dig my 20 metre ethernet cable out of the garage and use that

Hi
Looking around the various support forums.
Both openSUSE & Mandriva seem most likely to.
Work with most set ups that is.

Hi
A thought just occurred to me.
Does it work running from Live CD.
If so full install should too!

Yet to try from Live CD - Was going with the theory that if I was going to break something might as well do it properly.
so was just going to do the full install. will go and try the live cd and see how it works first.
Re: Wi-Fi & Linux
Update - nope it does not work when booting from the live cd. time to head over to the linux forum to have a look
Re: Wi-Fi & Linux
update no.2 - logged on here now from the burning PC using openSuSE Live CD
Had to do the following to get it to connect.
So in theory now I should be able to do a full Install and get connected via wi-fi to get any required updates.
Had to do the following to get it to connect.
Go into YAST (Administrator Settings)
Click on Network Settings
Select Traditional Method
Ensure DHCP was selected
Point it at my Router name
Enter the Router/wi-fi passkey and Bob's your Auntie
So in theory now I should be able to do a full Install and get connected via wi-fi to get any required updates.
Re: Wi-Fi & Linux
I have some laptops with Atheros and Realtek WiFi integrated that have had issues with some kernels. For the most part though, I've had pretty decent luck.
